A group of students from Japan visited WSIU this week.
The 13 students from the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies toured WSIU Radio and Television on September 11.
They were at Southern Illinois University Carbondale to participate in the Center for English as a Second Language's unique Community Engagement Program. It's a three-week experiential learning course based around the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
The students spend half their time volunteering for local nonprofit organizations and the other half preparing for and reflecting on these visits. At the end of the program, they share a presentation about their experience with one of the organizations and how its work and mission could be replicated in their home country.
At WSIU, the students heard from Executive Director Fred Martino, Ph.D.
Martino talked about the similarities and differences between broadcasting in the United States and other countries, including Japan. Students also heard about the significance of September 11. In addition, Martino shared his experience reporting on the tragedy while serving as a journalist in Michigan.
