Under the leadership of State's Attorney Joseph Cervantez, The Jackson County State's Attorney Office is providing Gun Locks for Community Safety. The gun locks are being distributed through Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America via its local Southern Illinois Group. Giveaways are scheduled county-wide at public venues. Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America distributed 300 gun locks in the month of June alone.

Cervantez is leading the southern Illinois region in this work to encourage all families to secure guns separately from securing ammunition. Gun violence is the number one cause of death for children in the United State. 4.6 million children live in homes where guns are not secured. Safe storage can lower the risk of unintentional shootings by children and curb suicide attempts by those underage. Safe storage also lowers the number of guns stolen from homes and vehicles.
