Murphysboro Police Warn of Phone Scam

By Brandi Fields

Murphysboro, IL – Murphysboro Police urge residents of the Big Muddy River Assisted Living Center to be on the lookout for an ongoing telephone scam.

A person identifying himself as a Sergeant Brown with the Illinois State Police is advising residents of the living center that a family member has been in an accident and to contact another state policeman at 773-503-5927 extension 72.

According to police, the scam, perpetrated by a Cook County inmate allows the inmate to receive one thousand dollars worth of phone calls for every person who dials the number.

Police strongly advises anyone who receives a call from 773-503-5927 to report it to your local police department.
