In December the Illinois Sheriff's Association announced their work on a pilot program providing mental health services to inmates in their jails.

Applications for the academy are due by February 2.

The conspiracy occurred on several occasions in southern Illinois from March through May 2023.

At this point in the investigation, both incidents appear to be related.

57-year-old Edward Bates, most recently of Olney, pleaded guilty.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Anthony Copeland took the role as Carbondale's new police chief in September.
