Springfield, IL – Cases of whooping cough in Illinois are already up more than 20 percent over last year.
Mark Amerson with the Illinois Department of Public Health says more cases of pertussis (whooping cough) are being reported in the state. He says there are specific symptoms to watch for.
Amerson says part of the problem is more people are not responding well to the vaccine. Another is the phenomenon of waning immunity.
The total of cases reported in Illinois this year is almost 900, compared with 648 in all of 2009.
