I-57 Incident Ends in Death

By By: The Associated Press

Benton, IL – Police say a Kentucky man wanted on a charge of attempted murder killed himself after police in Illinois stopped his truck on Interstate 57 near Benton.

Thirty-nine-year-old Timothy Johnson of Sturgis, Kentucky shot himself Friday as officers approached his vehicle, just north of the Benton-West City exit. Johnson died at a hospital.

An Illinois State Police spokesman says Johnson was wanted for allegedly shooting his wife in the leg in Union County, Kentucky on Friday morning.

Johnson stopped his truck after police had blocked traffic in both directions.
