Southern Illinois Students Receive State History Fair Awards

Three southern Illinois junior high students received statewide awards during the annual Illinois History Expo in Springfield.

The state competition took place last Thursday.  It's sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

Two statewide winners are students at Giant City Grade School in Carbondale.  Tory Lydy is the recipient of the Illinois Society Colonial Dames 17th Century Award for her entry on Indians and their relationship to the development of southern Illinois.   Ethan Lind won the Abraham Lincoln Association Award for his junior Division project, Lincoln's Suspension of  Habeus Corpus."

Alixandria Wheeler of Norris City-Omaha Grade School won an Illinois Labor History Society Award for her entry on the Centralia coal mine disaster.

More than 1,400 junior and senior high school students from across the state participated in state's annual history expo. The students were winners selected during regional history fairs held earlier this year. The regional fairs and Illinois History Expo are coordinated by the IHPA's students History Program.  More information is available on line at www.illinois-history.gov.
