All City of Cape Girardeau water customers will remain under a boil advisory or order the rest of this week following a major water line break on Monday.
CIty officials say customers should limit water usage to essential needs, and use bottled water or water that’s been boiled and cooled for drinking, food preparation, and handwashing.
They're hopeful to restore verified-clean water by the weekend but encourage all customers to prepare for a longer water advisory.
Now that water main is repaired, and the water plant is running again, partially treated water will be introduced into the system. This water must be boiled and cooled before it is consumed.
The partially treated water is important to pressurize the system to restore some water service to residents and agencies who have gone without. Even when the water comes back for everyone, the whole city will remain under a boil advisory or order for at least two more days while the water is tested and verified safe.
The Southeast Missouri State University campus will be closed and classes canceled Wednesday due to the water main break.
Residence hall students who can safely travel home are encouraged to do so to reduce the demand on the limited water capacity on campus.
Students staying on campus are advised to not do laundry, limit shower length, and avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily.
Once water is restored, the campus will be on a boil water order until further notice.
