SIU is celebrating Native American Heritage Month this November with a series of special events. All the events are free and open to everyone.
The aim is to honor the contributions of Native Americans while dispelling myths and focusing on their rich cultural history and modern realities. Events kick off with a talk by Jay Bird, author of Hidden Under the Water, who will share his healing journey and ancestral connections.
Other key events include discussions on cultural appreciation versus appropriation. Maxbiya Shawl, a two-spirit Nakoda activist, will lead a Lunch and Learn on Nov. 18, exploring the differences between respectful engagement and harmful misrepresentation of Indigenous cultures. Additional activities include a movie night featuring Killers of the Flower Moon (Nov. 7), a Native art paint party (Nov. 14), and a book read-along for Weaving Sundown in a Scarlet Light.
Carol Samarah, SIU’s inaugural NAGPRA program director, is working to ensure that Native American cultural heritage is protected and respected on campus.
