Israel's military dramatically steps up bombing in Gaza

At least 72 were killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza overnight, according to Gaza health officials. Israeli officials say the strikes are a warning to Hamas to surrender or face an expanded offensive.

Hadeel al-Shalchi is an editor with Weekend Edition. Prior to joining NPR, Al-Shalchi was a Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press and covered the Arab Spring from Tunisia, Bahrain, Egypt, and Libya.
