Former SIU System President Glenn Poshard read poetry Monday morning at the SIU student center. Poshard read some of his own poetry as well as poems by other authors.
It was part of a free poetry reading to benefit the Saluki food pantry. Attendees were asked to bring food donations for the event.
The pantry provides food for SIU students and their dependents. During the 2024-25 academic year the pantry served 280.
Poshard read poetry that speaks to his life from his time growing up in southeastern Illinois, the deaths of family members, and his time serving as Congressman for southern Illinois.
Poshard hopes that the event can help those students who may need a little help to put some food in their pantry.
Poshard says he shares an understanding with those who do not have enough food. One poem shared his memories of his dad bringing food home from the county trustee.
This was the 27th poetry reading by Poshard to support food pantries. He says he hopes to reach his goal of 50 readings before Christmas.
