Eastern Illinois University students and longtime residents have come to the rescue of a Charleston coffee shop whose owner owes the state about $18,000 in back taxes.
They've raised more than $19,000 to help keep Jackson Avenue Coffee open. The Times-Courier in Charleston and Mattoon Journal-Gazette report Both students and long-time residents pitched in to raise the money over five days. The coffee shop has work from local artists hanging on the walls and hosts evenings where musicians can take the stage.
