The Better Business Bureau often receives complaints about wedding-related issues.
This includes but is not limited to vendor delays, last minute cancellations, or phony charges.
Sydney Waters, the BBB’s regional director, warns about unexpected fees that may come up on your special day.
"If you've never had a wedding before, you probably aren't aware that some caterers, hotels, or reception venues charge extra for things like plate splitting or cake cutting or corkage fees. These are fees that, if you have an especially strict budget, you're going to want to factor in. Ask vendors about any additional fees upfront."
The BBB has also received reports of gowns not being the correct size or color, arriving too late, or alterations not being completed in time. Make sure to order everything for your wedding in advance.
Get a written agreement from the band or DJ that includes the times they will play. It's also a good idea to listen to them play in person.
Ask the photographer about the delivery method of the photos and if or when the wedding guests can access them.
If you're booking a limo or other forms of transportation, wait to pay the entire amount.
Waters adds that when booking a floral arrangement, remember that arrangements of fresh flowers may change according to what's available on your wedding day.
"There is a way you can control this, by confirming a minimum size of your bouquet or stems in each arrangement. Talk to your florist and ask how they handle last minute substitutes and charges."
In addition, make sure to research any services you will need for your wedding day.
Avoid paying upfront and use a credit card to dispute charges if needed. Follow up with the vendors at least two weeks before the event.
