SIU Alumni entrepreneurs are being called to bring their businesses to Carbondale and Southern Illinois with a new initiative launched on Wednesday.

The SIU Foundation and Alumni Association signed an agreement called Salukis Build Here with the City of Carbondale, Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, Carbondale Main Street and SI Now. The project is meant to encourage alumni to either start, relocate, or expand their businesses in Southern Illinois.

The City of Carbondale says they're committed to providing resources and a supportive environment to help businesses grow and thrive.

SIU Alumni Association Executive Director Molly Hudgins says this all started with a meeting over lunch this summer between some of the leaders of these groups.

Michelle Sirles owns Rendleman Orchards with her Husband Wayne. Wayne's the vice president of the Alumni Association. Michelle is an alumni of the university and she thinks this parternship will serve the businesses, community, and keep students coming back after they graduate.

To celebrate this new initiative, the community is invited to a celebration at 4pm on October 23rd at Hangar 9 in downtown Carbondale. The event will feature alumni-owned businesses and food and beverage vendors.
