llinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs says the state’s Bright Start 529 College Savings Plan is celebrating its 25th anniversary with record growth.

Assets have climbed to more than $14 billion across 327,000 accounts, with families contributing about $800 million this year alone. Since its launch in 2000, more than 250,000 students have used Illinois 529 funds for college, trade schools, and apprenticeships. Bright Start has been nationally recognized as one of the top five gold-rated 529 plans, praised for low fees and strong performance. Frerichs says the program helps families prepare for the future while building a “college-going culture” in Illinois.
