The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recognizes several individuals and organizations for their outstanding volunteer efforts in 2024.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recognizes several individuals and organizations for their outstanding volunteer efforts in 2024.

The IDNR wants to recognize Gary Cope of Collinsville, who has greatly contributed to the Interpretive Center at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in St. Clair County. Since 2010, he has greeted guests and enhanced their experience with his storytelling as a docent in the gallery.

The IDNR also wants to thank Robert and Marcia Shelby of West Salem, who have consistently volunteered at Beall Woods State Park in Wabash County. They have dedicated themselves to conservation through their work for the Illinois Natural History Survey Bird Count, the Christmas Bird Count, and other surveys.

Special thanks to Nancy Cottom of Giant City, who has volunteered at Giant City State Park for the past eight years. She has done everything from answering visitor questions, office work, and directing traffic. She and her dogs, Arlow and Kelsey, also greet visitors as the quote "bark rangers".
