In Jackson County, Michael C. Batinski, author and professor emeritus of history at SIU Carbondale, will host three presentations that examine the forgotten history of Jackson County and Southern Illinois. Presentations are based on his book titled, “Forgetting and the Forgotten: A Thousand years of Contested Histories in the Heartland. The series will examine the role of “pastkeepers” and their roles as gatekeepers of local narratives. These pastkeepers highlight the history of Jackson County and Southern Illinois while hiding or marginalizing other narratives such as the treatment of Native Americans, African Americans and immigrants. All three presentations are free and open to the public.
