There may soon be more restrictions on cell phone use for those who drive in Illinois.
The House Friday approved a bill that would make it illegal to talk on a handheld cell phone while driving. The measure passed on a 64-46 vote. It would continue to allow drivers to talk on their cell phones as long as they are using a hands-free device. The restrictions would apply to smart phones, tablets, and other hand held electronic communications devices. Texting while driving is already against the law in Illinois.
State Representative David Harris of Mt. Prospect supports the bill. He says cell phones seem to be the biggest distraction for drivers. Opponents, like Representative Mike Bost of Murphysboro say the measure goes too far. Bost suggests there are many things that are dangerous to do while driving including applying makeup… eating… adjusting the radio... and driving with children in the back seat.
There are some exceptions to the cell phone ban including truck drivers and other motorist who utilize C-B radios and other types of 2-way radios. Electronic dispatching devices would also be exempt along with to g-p-s navigation devices.
The legislation isHB-1247. It now moves to the Senate where supporters expect it to pass.
