Democracy Day: September 15, 2024

WSIU is committed to helping you feel confident participating in democracy, whether that’s voting, explaining to a new neighbor how elections work, or simply discussing current events.

That’s why we’re participating in Democracy Day, a nationwide journalism collaborative meant to bring attention to gaps in American democracy, the context they exist in, and what’s being done to fix them.

September 15 is the one day each year where print, radio, TV, and digital media come together to report on democracy in the U.S., and we’re excited to show you what we have planned!

WSIU is interviewing young people throughout the region for this project. In this video, a student at Southern Illinois University Carbdonale talked about the importance of voting.

News Literacy

A functioning democracy depends on reliable information. But how do you ensure what you are reading, watching, and hearing is reliable? The News Literacy Project, a nonpartisan education nonprofit, is building a national movement to advance the practice of news literacy throughout American society. Fred Martino talks with the nonprofit's Civic Engagement Director, Alee Quick. In this episode of WSIU’s CaptiolView, they discuss the challenges faced by a lack of news literacy and the education efforts that show promise for addressing those challenges.
