The Illinois Freedom Caucus’ lawsuit challenging the $55 billion state budget advanced with its first substantive hearing in Sangamon County Court. The group alleges Democrat leaders forced through the budget at midnight using unconstitutional procedures.
Attorney Bryan Drew argued the court must ensure legislative accountability, citing past Illinois Supreme Court rulings that constitutional requirements cannot be ignored. Judge Adam Giganti questioned the defense on safeguards in the budget process.
The Freedom Caucus says it’s “an uphill battle,” but insists their fight is for transparency, accountability, and constitutional integrity in state budgeting.
