WSIU Hosts 58th Illinois Senate Candidates

Candidate Interview to air on WSIU-TV This Friday

Carbondale, Ill. -- WSIU Public Television, a public media arm of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, will present the first of several local candidate forums as part of their Election 2012 program series. The first candidate forum features Incumbent Republican Senator DavidLuechtefeldof Okawville and Democratic challenger MichaelBiglerof Anna who are vying to represent residents of the newly-drawn 58th Illinois Senate District.

The half-hour program airs on WSIU-TV 8.1 and WUSI-TV 16.1 this Friday, September 28 at 7:30pm,with repeats on Sunday, September 30 at 12:30pm and Friday, October 5 at 5pm. The interview also will air on WSIU's second digital channel, WSIU-TV 8.2 and WUSI-TV 16.2, on Saturday, September 29 at 4pm, Sunday, September 30 at 9pm, and Monday, October 1 at 8pm.

The candidates give their views on Governor Pat Quinn's decision to close the Tamms Correctional Center and other local state facilities, dealing with the state's $83-billion unfunded pension liability, balancing the state budget, fracking, and the future of concealed carry legislation in Illinois.

Luechtefeld, a retired teacher and former basketball coach, has represented the southwest Illinois Senate district since 1995. Bigler, who works for the Illinois Department of Transportation, is currently a member of the Anna City Council and previously served on the Anna-Jonesboro High School Board.
