WSIU, Carbondale Library to Host Free Film Screening This Saturday
Community Cinema Film Featured: Soul Food Junkies
Carbondale, Ill. -- Reporters, camera crews, and photographers are invited to cover a free Community Cinema screening and discussion of the film Soul Food Junkies, which will take place Saturday, January 26 at 2:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 West Main in Carbondale. WSIU and the Carbondale Public Library are co-sponsoring the screening.
Angie Bailey, Director of Health Education at the Jackson County Health Department in Murphysboro, and Jo Sanders, Coordinator of the Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) Health Ministry, will lead a discussion after the film. Joining Bailey and Sanders will be local ambassadors of Project Power, a program developed by the American Diabetes Association for predominantly African American church congregations.
In Soul Food Junkies, filmmaker Byron Hurt sets out to learn more about this rich culinary tradition, its relevance to black cultural identity, and its impact on health in communities of color. The film also examines the socioeconomics of the American diet, and how the food industry profits from making calories cheap, but healthy options expensive and hard to find.
WSIU and the Carbondale Public Library will host Community Cinema screenings at the library at 2:30pm on the last Saturday of each month through June 2013.
