Tonight - Live Conversation with Central Park Five Producers
Local Discussion to follow at Guyon Auditorium, SIU Morris Library
Carbondale, Ill. -- Reporters, photographers, and camera crews are invited to cover the second in a two-part series of local events sponsored by WSIU Public Broadcasting, the SIU Center for Inclusive Excellence, and the SIU Black Male Initiative.
The event will be held TONIGHT, Wednesday, April 17, from 5:30-7pm at SIU Morris Library's Guyon Auditorium and will feature a live streamed conversation with Ken Burns and Sarah Burns, two of the three producers of the PBS special The Central Park Five, and four of the five exonerated men who were wrongfully convicted of the rape of a female jogger in New York's Central Park in 1989 and came to be known as "The Central Park Five.”
This live conversation will be streamed from The Times Center in New York City. New York Times columnist Jim Dwyer will lead the conversation with Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and the exonerated men as part of the “TimesTalks” series.
A local “Q & A” session will follow led by SIU Criminology and Criminal Justice graduate Nick Bates. Refreshments will be provided.
Questions about the event should be directed to Vickie Devenport, WSIU outreach coordinator, at (618) 453-6148 or vickie.devenport@wsiu.org.
The Central Park Five, which aired on WSIU-TV on Tuesday, April 16, tells the story of Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York City's Central Park in 1989. The film chronicles the Central Park Jogger case from the perspective of the five teenagers whose lives were upended by this miscarriage of justice.
