Southern 7 Health Department is urging residents to take precautions as summer heat sets in. Officials say heat-related illness can strike anyone but is especially dangerous for seniors, outdoor workers, and those with medical conditions.
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are the most serious risks, with symptoms ranging from dizziness and nausea to dangerously high body temperatures. In severe cases, heatstroke can be life-threatening and requires immediate emergency care.
To stay safe, avoid prolonged exposure, stay in air-conditioned spaces, take cool showers, and never leave pets or people in hot cars.
