For many years, the Campus of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale has been known for having a beautiful campus, with many trees and plants dotting the campus.
In fact, according to the University News Services, on the 1,200 acre main campus, there are nearly 5,200 trees, including 155 different species.
And now, ArbNet, a national agency whose purpose is to recognize tree-friendly campuses, has officially recognized SIU Carbondale for it's work in maintaining the tree-friendly atmosphere. SIU-C is now designated as a level II accredited arboretum; the only Illinois University with the distinction.
And recently, WSIU took a walk on Campus and talked with several students to see what they thought of the recognition.
WSIU also sat down with Geory Kurtzahls, Sustainability Coordinator of the Campus.
