Girls and boys in grades 5-9 can explore careers in science and mathematics during an event at Southern Illinois University Carbondale this November.

Registration is now open for the annual Expanding Your Horizons conference, set for Nov. 4 at the SIU Student Center and other areas on campus. The cost is $10 if students register by Oct. 16, $17 after that date.

Workshops, networking and other events

The annual event provides workshops, networking and hands-on experiences aimed at increasing students’ awareness of careers in such areas as science, technology, engineering, math and more.

The event also provides participants with opportunities to meet and interact with role models who are active in math- and science-related careers.

Organizers hope many participants attend the event, along with teachers and parents from throughout Southern Illinois.

Experts help with many topics

The workshop includes topics such as aviation, geology, biological sciences, chemistry, psychology, mathematics, engineering and technology, medicine and zoology. Students can participate in three areas of their greatest interest.

The conference also will feature professionals donating their time to lead workshops that will focus on career exploration and provide opportunities for participants to have positive experiences with math and science.
