Southern Illinois University Carbondale has announced the appointment of Shelly Gehrke as the new associate provost for student success, effective September 9. Gehrke, who brings over 20 years of experience in higher education, will oversee the university's student success initiatives, aligning with SIU’s Imagine 2030 strategic plan. This plan emphasizes improving student retention and developing strategies for post-graduation success.
Gehrke's career includes nearly 14 years at Emporia State University, where she served as vice president for enrollment management and student success. She played a pivotal role in restructuring student services to provide comprehensive support, enhancing student recruitment, access, success, and graduation rates. Her experience also includes roles at the University of Minnesota as director of academic advising and at The University of Texas at Austin as an academic adviser.
Gehrke holds a doctorate in higher education administration and a master’s degree in college and university student personnel administration, both from The University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, she earned bachelor’s degrees in environmental science and public relations from Stephen F. Austin University. Her leadership is expected to drive holistic student support and success at SIU Carbondale.
