Representatives from the Illinois Human Rights Commission (IHRC) will be at SIU Simmons Law School on Wednesday, Sept. 18, to discuss human and civil rights laws in Illinois.
The free, public presentation is set for 4:30 p.m. in the Lesar Law Building, Room 102 on the SIU Carbondale campus. Chief Administrative Law Judge Brian Weinthal, Executive Director Tracey Fleming and General Counsel David Larson will provide an overview of the protections afforded under the Illinois Human Rights Act for all Illinois residents and explain how to exercise one’s rights at the IHRC. Continuing legal education credits are available.
“We are very excited to host Chief Judge Brian Weinthal and his colleagues from the Illinois Human Rights Commission and to learn more about their work upholding human and civil rights laws in our state,” said Cindy Buys, a professor of constitutional and immigration law.
The seven-member commission comprises a chair and six commissioners. James S. Shovlin, who joined the commission as an administrative law judge in August, is a two-degree SIU Carbondale graduate. He earned his law degree from SIU in 2013 and a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2009.
