SIU Carbondale will open the campus to sky observers during the scheduled total lunar eclipse next week.
The March 13 to 14 orange-red "blood moon" will be visible over the Americas, and will appear to experience different moon phases throughout the eclipse.
Experts expect an hour of totality between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m., when the Earth will block sunlight from reaching the moon's surface.
Starting at midnight, the public can participate in eclipse-related activities on the southwest lawn of the Neckers building.
Participants are invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, and non alcoholic beverages while enjoying guided telescope viewings.
Steve Gariepy, an experienced education specialist and researcher, will lead a night-time nature walk, beginning at the telescope area at Neckers.
Attendees should dress appropriately for the outdoor events and are encouraged to bring their own telescopes or photographic equipment.
