Tori Slowick, left, was chosen for a unique internship that led to a full-time job with HHM Health, the company owned by fellow SIU graduate Brian Hawkins.

A 1991 graduate of SIU-Carbondale is giving back to his alma mater through a unique internship program.

Brian Hawkins is the president and chief executive officer of HHM Health, a corporation with six locations in the Dallas area. He’s created an opportunity for current students in SIU's health care management program.

The first intern, Tori Slowick from Sycamore, Illinois, spent a week last fall in Dallas learning all about HHM Health, meeting Hawkins and members of his team and getting her internship assignments.

Then, she returned to Illinois and worked remotely on projects throughout her 150-hour internship, that ran through late March. Her job involved working with human resources, salary planning, payroll conversion, data processing and more.

Late in the spring semester, Slowick returned to Dallas where she wrapped up her projects and made presentations detailing her work.

Hawkins offered Slowick a job, which she accepted. She'll begin her new job soon after she graduates this Saturday.

Hawkins plans to offer two internships to SIU students this fall.
