A workshop on the transformations AI is bringing to the world and the societal implications takes place this week at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Large Language Models Nexus: Bridging Technical Innovation and Ethical Horizons is set for 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Alumni Lounge in Engineering Building Room 131A.

In-person registrations will be accepted through Wednesday morning at the free, public event, which will bring together leading experts to explore how large language models (LLMs) are transforming AI across technical and ethical domains. It will feature expert panels, interactive demonstrations, and discussions on responsible and practical applications of LLMs in society.

“We believe this event is an excellent opportunity to highlight SIU’s leadership in AI innovation and ethics,” said Ahmed Imteaj, assistant professor of computer science and director of the Security, Privacy and Intelligence for Edge Devices (SPEED) Laboratory at SIU.

The event is aimed at fostering collaboration among academic researchers, industry leaders and other stakeholders, bridging the gap between technological innovation and ethical frameworks, and contributing to responsible AI development and application.

Highlights of the event include the opportunity to connect with leading AI experts, explore real-world LLM applications and join in on interactive sessions.
