SIU Study Finds Low-Cost Game Increases Physical Activity in Adults with Disabilities

A group of adults walks outdoors on a sunny fall day as part of a physical activity game organized by Southern Illinois University. One participant in a purple shirt and headphones leads the group, while others follow or observe in the background near trees and a brick building.

Participants in the “Step It Up” game, part of an SIU Carbondale research study, walk outdoors as part of an incentive-based program encouraging physical activity in adults with disabilities. The initiative uses wearable fitness trackers and simple rewards to motivate movement and promote health.

SIU researchers have found that a simple, incentivized game can significantly boost physical activity in adults with disabilities.

The “Step It Up” game, paired with small rewards like candy or gift cards, more than doubled participants’ step counts in studies conducted at SIU’s Evaluation and Developmental Center. The game is fun, easy to run, and highly effective, with opt-in rates over 90%. Researchers say this low-cost approach could be adopted in care facilities, schools, and beyond.

The work is part of SIU’s nationally respected behavior analysis and therapy program.
