The Southern Illinois University Symphony Orchestra will present a free, public concert on Tuesday, Oct. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. in Shryock Auditorium.
Under the director of Rossana Cauti, assistant professor of practice in the SIU School of Music and symphony orchestra music director, the concert program “offers a journey from the vivid colors of 19th-century Russian opera to the sweeping Romantic vistas of Rachmaninoff’s orchestral mastery,” Cauti said.
The evening opens with Mikhail Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla, followed by the centerpiece — Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2.
“Both works are beloved for their emotional richness, sweeping melodies, and orchestral depth,” Cauti said. “In Glinka’s overture, listeners are treated to a spirited, dramatic opening that sets the stage. Then Rachmaninoff’s Second carries us through a landscape of lyrical beauty, introspection and grandeur.”
Cauti added that the concert continues the orchestra’s “dedication to presenting works that engage both seasoned concertgoers and newcomers to orchestral music. The orchestra brings together SIU faculty, students and regional musicians in a collaborative artistic effort.”
