The SIU Alumni Association hopes to reach a younger audience with a new children's board book. They recently published the book "SIU A to Z".
Each page features a letter of the alphabet and a landmark or tradition connected with the university. In addition to connecting people with SIU, Alumni association executive Director Molly Hudgins says the book is meant to be engaging and help build children's literacy.
Hudgins says this has been a fun project for her and the staff of the alumni association.
They plan to provide copies of the books to all the children in the SIU preschools.
A donation from the Walker Borum Foundation will help provide a copy of the book to babies born at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
Hudgins says John and Nancy Jackson provided a key donation to help the project come to life. They also received donations from SIU Provost Sheryl Tucker, her husband David Beech, and Virginia Rinella, a retired SIU employee also contributed to the book's production.
John Jackson says the book was a natural fit because of SIU's history and his wife's background in education.
