SIH Volunteers - WSIU In-Focus

Doctors and nurses are often the face of the care you receive when you go to the hospital or healthcare provider. Then there's the support staff working together to help you when you walk through their doors. But there's one group of people that gives their time to help - the volunteers. SIH healthcare recently celebrated their more than 100 volunteers with an appreciation lunch saying they couldn't provide the care patients need without the commitment, compassion, and service volunteers provide.

When you talk with the volunteers, you find out they get something that money can't provide.

We attended the lunch to talk with SIH and their volunteers to find out more about the roles volunteers play in helping patients, their families, and the staff.

In this story we talk with Paula Frisch, Manager of Volunteer Services at SIH Memorial Hospital in Carbondale and the SIH Cancer Center. Karl Bartelsmeyer volunteers at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale and Liz Issler is the president of the Herrin Hospital Auxillary. Both explain what they do and what brought them to volunteering.
