To give students a brief break from final exams, the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts at SIU-Carbondale welcomed four-legged stress relievers to campus.

Humane society board member Dawn Legier says it's mutually beneficial.

"It's kind of stress relief for students during finals week. But, then also it's awareness for the humane society and what we do. If people want to volunteer and see the puppies at the shelter, they can. It lets people know about some fundraising events we have going on, kind of a PR kind of thing."

Legier says one of their services people may not be aware of is that the Humane Society transports animals to other rescue facilities when they run out of room.

"There's kind of the impression that if we don't have room for an animal, they will be euthanized. That's really not the case. We work very hard to make sure they're placed in another no-kill facility that we've vetted, that we know the animals are going to be well cared for."

She says the Humane Society is always looking for volunteers.

Donations to the Humane Society of Southern Illinois are being accepted all week in the Dean's Office of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.
