In October, State Representative Dave Severin announced the launch of “Backpacks for Buddies”, a donation drive seeking new backpacks filled with overnight care items to be given to children placed in emergency foster care.
On Friday, the first installment of 45 backpacks were delivered to Severin's office in Marion.
The Benton republican says he's not sure how many backpacks will be needed.
"I don't know if we need 5 or 500. I think we're going to find out that the challenge is bigger than what we realize. But, we're going to meet the challenge."
Severin says his Backpacks for Buddies drive collects new backpacks - preferably gender neutral - as well as items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo.
Donations can be dropped through December 31 at Severin's district office in Marion.
