Lawmakers Point to Prison Problems

IDOC

Southern Illinois lawmakers say a SWAT team has been at the Menard Correctional Center investigating reports of weapons, drugs and a gang hit list.

State Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton) and State Representative Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg) say this and news of an increasing number of lockdowns at Illinois prisons are reasons for Governor Pat Quinn to slow down the process of closing the Tamms Supermax Prison.

They say they are very concerned because Quinn plans to transfer the Tamms Supermax inmates to Menard and the Pontiac Correctional Center, both of which they say are extremely overcrowded.
