The state is running out of money to investigate misconduct by doctors. But a proposal before the Illinois House could fill that hole in the budget.
The plan, passed by the lame-duck Senate Thursday would provide 10-million dollars. Republicans opposed the plan, because the money was originally collected as fees and fines meant to regulate other professions like dentists and hairdressers. Senator Matt Murphy, a Republican from Palatine, says fund sweeps have been an on-going problem: "I understand the pressing nature of this issue and appreciate your interest in getting it done quickly, but it's also important to get it done right."
Democrats say their plan would just be a one-year fix. The House has until Wednesday to consider the proposal . That's when the current legislative session ends.
