US Postal Service customers in DeSoto may see some changes in their mail delivery and the operation of their post office.
Postal Service spokesperson Valerie Hughes says they are reviewing the operations of all rural post offices across the country in an effort to maintain rural mail delivery. She says DeSoto residents are being surveyed and a public meeting will be held on February 12th do discuss the options. She says people who live in bedroom communities, like DeSoto, may prefer other options for their mail delivery such as switching to a PO Box in Carbondale or another community where they work or frequent.
A letter sent January 4th to DeSoto postal customers indicates that the Postal Service does not plan to do away with local mail delivery or eliminate local post office services, but may change retail services available at the post office depending on the customer survey results. The survey asks customers to choose from 4-different options ranging from no change to the potential closure of the DeSoto post office and consolidation of services with a Post Office in a neighboring community. Hughes says another option is what the Postal Service calls a "Village Post Office" which would locate some retail services, such as stamp sales and post office boxes, at a local business or municipal building within the community.
