President Obama Declares Disaster

Alex Wilson, WSIU

President Barack Obama has signed a disaster declaration for 15 counties in Illinois after severe storms and tornadoes struck the state.

Obama signed the declaration on Tuesday, ordering federal aid for the areas affected after the Nov. 17 storms. Federal assistance that's made available can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans for uninsured property losses.

Obama's action makes federal funding available to Champaign, Douglas, Fayette, Grundy, Jasper, La Salle, Massac, Pope, Tazewell, Vermilion, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, Will, and Woodford counties. Federal Emergency Management is continuing damage surveys and other counties also may be included for federal assistance.

Six people died in the severe weather in Illinois.
