BCBS of Illinois' parent company is fined again for delayed compliance to update its provider directories

The Illinois Department of Insurance announced Friday fines totaling nearly $232,000 dollars for Health Care Service Corporation, the parent company of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.

The fine is for violations of the Network Adequacy and Transparency Act requirements for health insurers to post up-to-date, accurate, and complete provider directory information.

Earlier this year, following a targeted market conduct examination of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, the Department ordered the company to update provider directories and make the information clearer to consumers.

The health insurer’s delayed compliance with implementing changes to its provider directories resulted in the new fine.

Last March, the insurance department fined Health Care Service Corporation $605-thousand dollars for violating the Network Adequacy and Transparency Act.
