WSIU recently completed a series of Family Fun Day events across the region to engage with families around the theme of “Downunder” centered around the PBS KIDS show “Work It Out Wombats!” The annual events expanded in reach in 2024, adding a Quincy celebration to events in Mt. Vernon and Springfield.
The Quincy event was hosted by Madison Park Christian Church from 1-3 pm on Saturday, April 20. Roughly 75 people attended and were entertained with games, crafts, and pictures with Malik the wombat. Each child also took home an age-appropriate book.
Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon hosted the Family Fun Day from 1-3 pm on Saturday, April 27. Some 200 individuals enjoyed games and crafts supported by sponsors, as well as a fun program for kids about the Didgeridoo, conducted by Chad Schott, owner of Drumzrguruven. Malik the wombat was again present for photo opportunities and shaved ice was available for all attendees.
As part of our final Family Fun Day, the Henson-Robinson Zoo in Springfield hosted a free day at the zoo for a second year from 1-3 pm on Saturday, May 11. About 800 entered the zoo during this time period, many enjoying games and crafts conducted by sponsor volunteers. Malik was on hand for photo opportunities, with all children receiving an age-appropriate book.
PBS KIDS Downunder would not have been possible without the generous financial and volunteer support of the following sponsors: Molina Healthcare, State Street Bank, Blessing Health System, Niemann’s, Refreshment Services Pepsi, Mt. Vernon Tourism, General Dynamics, SSM Health, AISIN, Klein Orthodontics, King City Property Brokers, SMTD, CEFCU and County Market.
