On Wednesday, May 22, WSIU, in conjunction with Molina Healthcare of Illinois, held a reading event at the C.E. Brehm Memorial Public Library in Mt. Vernon. Roughly 50 children and parents attended. They were entertained with a book reading, educated on American Sign Language and each child received an age-appropriate book, courtesy of Molina.
In the last few years, WSIU’s impact has grown enormously:
*High schools throughout Illinois nominate young people for WSIU’s “Top Teens” segment. The videos air in between other programs and are available worldwide through WSIU’s fast-growing YouTube channel.
*WSIU has started a news bureau pilot program with local libraries. Middle and high school students learn about news production in after-school programs and will produce their own segments.
*Students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale are producing “SIU Connections.” The segments feature a diverse range of people who have made an enormous contribution to life in our region.
And these are just the recent initiatives!
WSIU provides educational programming for young people every weekday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. And the station added the 24/7 PBS Kids channel, so programming is available to broadcast audiences anytime. The PBS Kids channel is also available at www.wsiu.org and on some local cable systems.
The main PBS channel is now available in the WSIU viewing area on Roku, Amazon Fire, and mobile devices through the PBS app.
While WSIU receives some state and federal funding, it would not be possible to operate the stations without member support. Consider donating today at www.wsiu.org. With recent inflation and the need to constantly maintain and update equipment, your donations are more important than ever.
As you consider your donation to WSIU, also consider this: in many communities throughout the nation, public media provides the only locally owned and operated broadcast stations. WSIU is truly Powered by You. Your contributions make it possible. And your input is valued and acted upon at the local level.
Thank you for helping keep WSIU strong. Please share the word! We’re stronger together. Every donation and every supporter are creating an extraordinary future for our region.
