Carbondale, IL – Monday's light snow showers in much of the region were a good reminder of what could lie ahead for the region this winter.
Officials with the Department of Transportation in southern Illinois say they are ready to battle whatever Mother Nature throws at them.
IDOT Engineer Keith Miley admits an increase in the price of salt is causing the department to install a more conservative approach to its traditional road clearing methods. But he says the focus will remain on traffic safety.
Miley says the increased cost for salt has not impacted the local supply. He says IDOT also has a contract with Central Management Services to obtain more salt if needed this winter.
