High Winds Knock Out Power, Close Schools

Carbondale, IL – High winds are being blamed for patchy power outages across the region this morning.

Ameren Illinois spokesman Leigh Morris says about 2,100 hundred customers statewide are in the dark this morning, after winds nearing 50 miles an hour downed trees and brought down limbs on power lines.

Locally, that includes customers in the DeSoto, Nashville, Chester and DuQuoin areas.

Morris says while the winds are a serious problem, crews are thankful they're not having to deal with ice in addition. Snow totals in the northern part of the state top 12 inches in some places, but Morris says crews are working to keep the power on.

DeSoto Grade School has canceled class as a result of the power outage.
