Springfield, IL – The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is urging visitors to the DuQuoin State Fair to take note of the rich history on the fairgrounds.
Created in 1923 by William Hayes, the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
David Blanchette with the preservation agency says it's a good time for people to remember what a historic jewel they have in Southern Illinois.
In addition to becoming home to the World Trotting Derby, the DuQuoin fairgrounds played host to the world's first night horse race in 1924, thanks to electric lighting.
The DuQuoin State Fair runs now through September 6th.
