Carbondale, IL – The University of Illinois Extension is working to prepare today's youth to be employable.
The center aims to help inform our youth about the ever changing skills that are required in the workplace.
They encourage people to focus on generic skills such as basic literacy skills, math, and communication skills rather than technical or field specific skills.
The hope is that these skills will help today's youth regardless of what field they enter and be transferable to any job they desire.
However simply possessing these skills is not enough to obtain a job they must also have critical thinking skills to help them in their field.
The center says that one of the best ways to equip our young people is to have parents start by talking with their children about the importance of developing skills and a good work ethic at home.
Outside of the home children can join out-of-school education programs such as 4-H to help further prepare them with the skills required to obtain a job in today's economy.
