Du Quoin Man Charged with Stealing from Shriner's Club

By AP

Pinckneyville, IL – The treasurer of a southern Illinois Shrine Club is accused of stealing more than $12,000 from the organization.

Perry County prosecutors have charged 48-year-old Paul Clapp of Du Quoin with felony theft.

Du Quoin assistant police chief Jamie Ellermeyer says the money was found missing in March after the Perry County Shrine Club's president and other members questioned the bookkeeping and account balance.

Ellermeyer says the club confronted Clapp, who admitted the theft. Clapp was appointed the club's treasurer in 2008.

The club's funds assist the East St. Louis' Ainad Temple and the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children in St. Louis.

Clapp was jailed on $40,000 bond.
