West Frankfort Lake Reopened For Swimming and Skiing

By Brad Palmer

West Frankfort, IL – The city of West Frankfort says swimming and water skiing will be allowed in the New City Lake - at the discretion of those who wish to do so.

Mayor Tom Jordan says the public health department has tested the lake for increased levels of E-coli bacteria and determined the only areas with unsafe levels to be on the extreme east and west ends near the dam.

He says the main body of the lake was found to have readings well below what would be considered dangerous, so swimming will be allowed at the regulated beach.

Officials temporarily banned water skiing and swimming in the lake on Friday because of potentially dangerous E-coli levels.
